Insecurity: Senate, Security Chiefs Meet Thursday 6th May

The Nigerian Senate has scheduled Thursday 6th May for an emergency meeting with the country’s security chiefs, against the backdrop of the worsening security situation of the country.

Galaxy’s Godfrey Eshiemoghie reports that Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, made the announcement Tuesday at the commencement of legislative business.

The meeting with the security chiefs which was earlier scheduled for this Tuesday had to be rescheduled owing to an ongoing National Security Council meeting holding at the Presidential Villa, thus prompting the change in date.

In his announcement, the Senate President, therefore, said it is very likely that Tuesday’s Security Council meeting continued Wednesday.

And Thursday which is the scheduled date of meeting with the Security chiefs will afford the Senate the opportunity for need assessment with regards to a supplementary budget for the funding of the country’s military which is grappling with the issue of poor funding.

The National Security Council Meeting presided by Muhammadu Buhari commenced last week.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha; Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari; Minister of Defence, Maj-Gen. Bashir Magashi (rtd); National Security Adviser (NSA) to the President, Maj-Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtd), attended the meeting held at the First Lady Conference room.

Others in attendance were Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Lucky Irabor; Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru; Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu; Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Isiaka Oladayo Amoo and acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Usman Alkali.
