Buhari May Reopen Border Soon – Finance Minister

There are indications that President Muhammadu Buhari may have made up his mind to reopen the nation's border routes, pending when he receives a detailed report to that effect.

Minister of Finance Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, revealed this on Wednesday saying President Muhammadu Buhari will soon receive a report of a presidential committee to advise on the reopening of the nation’s borders.

Nigeria, the largest economy and the most prosperous of the 15-member Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), last year August closed its land borders on account of the proliferation of illegal importation of drugs, small arms and agricultural products into Nigeria from neighbouring West African countries.

According to her, the committee set up by  President Buhari had done an assessment of the gains of the closure and had recommended to the president to reopen the borders.

She said once members of the committee sign the report, it will be submitted but she was silent on the day of submission and also the date of the reopening.

The Minister also explained steps expected to be taken by the government to reflate the economy and bring it out of recession.

On the issue of federal workers' salary, she said there's no issue with federal workers' salary adding that government has paid salaries for November and shall pay salaries for December.
